Amid fresh calls from war veterans to Zimbabwean president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, to step down –  People’s Progressive Party of Zimbabwe’s (PPPZ) leader Timothy Mapfumo-Chiguvare  has raised its hand as the alternative.

Mapfumo-Chiguvare, who doubles as a pastor, has outlined his party’s 2025 vision. The PPPZ leader has accused Zanu-PF of having won the August 2023 elections fraudulently.

Not long ago, war veteran and Zanu-PF’s central committee member, Blessed Geza, addressed a press conference of all chimurenga (struggle) heroes slamming Mnangagwa’s leadership.

“We fought in second chimurenga with the hope of bringing economic emancipation, freedom and justice,” Geza said. “Sadly, these values and aspirations continue to evade us. The majority of Zimbabweans remain poor.”

Mapfumo-Chiguvare said in a statement that decades of mismanagement, corruption, and oppression had stifled Zimbabwe's potential.

“The PPPZ is ready to confront these challenges head-on , advocating for ethical leadership , electoral reforms , and policies that promote prosperity for all Zimbabweans,” he said.

Mapfumo-Chiguvare said that his party would strive to unite the nation, promote ethical leadership, drive economic growth and invest in science and technology.

“Zimbabwe is at a crossroads. We have an emergency,” he said.

The current ZANU-PF government, Mapfumo-Chuguvare said, had eroded public institutions and enabled rampant corruption and looting of state funds and mineral resources.

Furthermore, he said, the Zanu-PF government failed to address the economic crisis - leading to widespread unemployment and poverty.

Mapfumo-Chuguvare said that the main issues facing Zimbabwe were:

• Economic mismanagement and skyrocketing inflation. “Zimbabwe is sinking at a high speed,” he said.

• A failing infrastructure - including roads, rail, electricity, and water systems;

• Massive corruption in the management of mineral resources, which is tantamount to treason; and

• Disregard for civil servants and critical sectors like health and education.

“The nation of Zimbabwe is in desperate need of a minister of common sense because this 2025 budget announced yesterday is not for the living. Its an abnormal state of affairs because the economic situation in the country is tense,  explosive and I can go so far as to say it is highly complex,” Mapfumo-Chuguvare said.

“It's like Zimbabweans are already in a blast furnace. Millions of the unemployed and senior citizens in Zimbabweans cannot afford one meal per day. We have an emergency. The country is directionless.”

In defending President Mnangangwa, Information Minister, Dr Jenfan Muswere,  has come out guns blazing against a faction of war veterans who attacked the president.

“The Constitution of Zimbabwe recognises the importance of freedom of expression, association and conscience but not the freedom to manufacture lies and defamatory statement.,” Muswere said.
