The Delmas area in Mpumalanga is on the spotlight again for another racist incident following the arrest of a white security guard after he allegedly shot and killed a black man with a hail of bullets.

Wessel Badenhorst (55) appeared in the Delmas Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder and attempted murder on March 25.

According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, police and paramedics were called to a farm near Delmas on March 22 where they found a woman in pain from a bullet wound. Next to her stood Badenhorst, holding a firearm, and there were also two vehicles. One of the vehicles’ windscreen was riddled with bullet holes.

“The woman indicated that she came to the farm with a male friend however at that moment, she did not know where he was,” Mdhluli said.

“What was more concerning to the members, was the riddled vehicle, belonging to the man whose whereabouts was unknown at that point, as well as the empty cartridges found on the ground, next to it. A search was immediately conducted on the surroundings in order to find him,” he added.

“It was during this time when the body of a male person with multiple gunshot wounds was found. Personnel from Emergency Medical Services unfortunately certified him dead at the scene. The female victim managed to confirm the body as being that of her friend who disappeared during the shooting,” Mdhluli said.

However, Mpumalanga EFF chairperson Collen Sedibe wrote in his Facebook page that his party’s activists went to the farm to get more evidence including cartridges and the deceased shoes.

“The racist was caught red-handed by the police trying to secretly bury the man. When we say, ‘kill the boer, kill the farmer,’ they are the first to cry the loudest [because] black life does not matter to them,” Sedibe said.

Badenhorst will remain in custody until he appears in court on April 3 2024 for bail application.

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF

Five years ago, two racism incidents have sent shock waves through coal mining and farming area when white farmers were accused of killing a black man.

A group of farmers assaulted three men – Doctor Masilela (30), Alfred Gumede (39) and Smanga Makhanya (26)  while they were walking in Stompiesfontein farm early evening. Masilela was shot dead while his friends managed to escape.

Masilela’s body was found on July 14 2019, when a group of EFF activists filled up a 15-seater minibus taxi and approached Philip van der Walt, who owns Stompiesfontein farm.

His badly damaged body was found in a government mortuary in Heidelberg, Gauteng, 55km from Delmas. Masilela had a big hole in his head. It was alleged that the farmers bumped him with a bakkie when he tried to flee, shot him and then drove off with his body and threw it from a bridge above the busy N17 road in Heidelberg – to be crushed by traffic.
